What happened in Riparian World?

What happened during this 2016-17 planting season at JCWC? We’ve broken it down by the numbers!

Pictured above: Our NCCC AmeriCorps Crew, without which many of the following numbers would be much lower!

This field season, in the riparian program, this is what happened:

WHERE? Where were we working?

We worked in 7 public parks and 17 private creekside properties.

WHAT? What did we do there? We planted 17,150 bare root plants and 1,080 willow stakes. Bonus: 1,796 of those bare root plants were free – thanks, Champoeg Nursery & East Multnomah SWCD!

SPECIAL PROJECTS: We installed 1 native plant meditation garden at Lao Buddhist Center NW (A project by our Confluence AmeriCorps member, Alexis).

WHO? We worked with:
10 NCCC AmeriCorps Crew members, and alongside 5 partners! Portland Parks & Recreation, City of Gresham, Wisdom of the Elders, NCCC AmeriCorps, & East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District

What about school groups? We worked with 116 students! From where? From 5 schools: Sabin-Schellenberg Center, Mt Scott Learning Center, SW Charter School, Centennial High School, Pacific International Academy

We were funded by 5 partners. To Clackamas SWCD, Metro, OWEB, Water Environment Services, and East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District… thank you!

ANIMAL SIGHTINGS:

We saw 2 ensatina salamanders and 3 bald eagles

FUN FACTS:

We had 6 snow/ice/wind days
1 boot lost to mud
4 pairs of torn pants
4 new tires for the truck!
1 faulty tarp led to 170 dropped plants (they were okay)

Hurrah for a great winter planting season made possible by all of our great NCCC crew members, our partners, funders, donors, and volunteers!
