Lichen Walk at Foster Floodplain with Ruth Williams

Join us at Foster Floodplain Natural Area on as we identify common lichen found around the Johnson Creek Watershed. There will be an initial presentation on featured lichens that we’ll likely find on the subsequent walk around the natural area.
Ruth Williams is a consulting arborist and plant enthusiast with degrees in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture from UC Davis. She has been drawing and painting plants for 20 years. She teaches and guides interpretive hikes on a wide variety of ecological subjects.

What: An educational lichen walk! There will be an outdoor presentation on lichen that you’ll find in the watershed, how to identify them and the important roles they play in the ecosystem. After the presentation, we’ll take a stroll around the floodplain to use our observational skills to spot and ID lichen, and to observe other interesting features of this natural area.
When: Saturday, March 23rd, 2024, 1- 3pm
Where: Foster Floodplain Natural Area (see directions below)
What to bring: Water bottle, snacks. Appropriate clothing for wet and muddy conditions. You’re welcome to bring a hand lens as well.
What to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear comfortable walking shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen, as appropriate.
What we provide: Instruction on how to identify local lichens. We will have hand lenses for participants to use during the event. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact sima@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare.
Health and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness.
Children are welcome: Children must be accompanied by an attentive adult.
Accessibility: This event may require standing or walking for long periods of time, or walking over uneven ground.

By car: Take Foster Rd. to 106th ave. Parking lot and street parking available.
By bike: The Springwater Trail intersects with Foster Rd and the natural area is just east of this intersection.
