September means Johnson Creek Days!

Every September we host several fun-filled educational events. For 2019, we have three. All events are free, but registration is required. Please follow the links below to register.

Saturday, September 7, Noon, Science in the Park

Please join us to hear stories and learn about our crawly creek friends from master storyteller, Ed Edmo, and a local entomologist, in this family-friendly event.

Where: Mill Park, 6201 SE Overland St. Milwaukie, OR

Contact Courtney@jcwc.org with any questions. REGISTER HERE

Saturday, September 21, 9 a.m. Restoration Tour: Mitchell Creek

This June, we completed our biggest restoration project in many years. We removed two culverts on Mitchell Creek that had created a large pond. This pond not only blocked fish passage, but it heated up the pond–and the creek downstream–to lethal temperatures. The pond is now gone, and we’ve added large wood structures to provide habitat for the “new” stream channel. There’s also a new floodplain wetland that’s now connected to the stream system.

Where: we’ll carpool in a school bus from Foster Floodplain! All are welcome.

Thursday, September 26, 6 p.m. Science Talk: Prairie-nesting birds at Powell Butte

Hear researcher Dr. Tom Virzi discuss the results of year #1 of a long-term study to study the impact of restoration at Powell Butte. JCWC community science volunteers collected bird data on five transects for 11 weeks this spring. Local brewer Coalition Brewing will be on hand to pour their signature offerings.

Where: All Saints Episcopal Church community room (same building as the JCWC office). All are welcome.

Saturday, September 28, 8 p.m. – Meet the Artist & her Mural

Meet local artist Danielle DeMuro. Earlier this year we partnered with her to get grant funding to paint a mural on our equipment storage container. For the past year our container–located at the old carwash site adjacent to Errol Heights Park–had been tagged several times. Neighbors complained to us and we agreed: the graffitti had to go! Danielle’s mural is the kind of art we all like to see: salmon, beaver, salmonberry and more! Come see the new mural, meet the artist. Snacks provided!

Where: SE 45th Ave near Harney St (next to Franz Bakery).
